User statistics: searches 2003

PiCarta is an integrated, multimaterial database which contains request facilities and which offers access to online resources and electronic documents among other things. The user who opts for PiCarta, can browse several databases at the same time by entering one search.
A prerequisite for connection to PiCarta is that the institution has signed a master contract for the supply of end-user services.

PiCarta has the following functionality:

  • integration of databases
  • integration of types of material
  • new search facilities
  • new sorting of search results ('relevance ranking')
  • more request facilities

Integration of databases

Within PiCarta, users can search simultaneously in the Pica-databases NCC and Online Contents. Besides, as a supplement an increasing number of databases is offered by external database suppliers. These will be offered to institutions who have signed a licence-agreement to that end.
The result of a search will always depend on the licences the 'own' institution has signed.

The following supplements are available, based on licence-agreements:

  • Swets & Zeitlinger
  • Chadwyck-Healey (Periodicals Contents Index)
  • EBSCO Academic Search
  • Elsevier
  • Kluwer Academic
  • Springer Verlag
  • Academic Press

Integration of types of material

Users can search irrespective of the type of material. It is possible to search all types of material simultaneously; besides, it is possible to compose a selection of certain types of material. (References to) The following types of material can be found in PiCarta:
  • Books
  • Periodicals
  • Articles
  • Abstracts
  • Tables of contents
  • Online resources
  • Sound
  • Software
  • Sheet music
  • Cartography
  • Letters
  • Illustrations
  • Audiovisual material

New search facilities

Due to a new search server, PiCarta offers more search facilities than the present Pica system. It is possible among other things, to work with larger search sets. By means of 'relevance ranking', titles are presented that answer the search as accurately as possible. Also, more search operators can be used such as proximity operators, boolean operators, wildcards, jokers, etc.

Alerting Service SDI

The Alerting Service SDI offers users of PiCarta the possibility to receive via e-mail the tables-of-content of periodicals they select themselves from the Online Contents database.

More request facilities

Supply of the requested publication is the main aim. Users can enter a request for all types of material via Inter Library Loan (IBL). For this, users need an IBL Deposit Account.
If a publication is available electronically, on the condition that he is authorized by his own institution, the user can also enter a request for electronic supply. Due to PiCarta's technology, a user can simply click abstracts, if available, or the electronic article in full text. New is that within Picarta these options are presented side by side for all publications irrespective whether they can be requested via IBL or electronically.
